Conversation with Abioye Olamilekan, a resilient young fashion design based in Iwaya Community.

"Son of a Pepper Seller" is a personal recollection of events during the lockdown in 2020 presented as a visual experience using crops and vegetables. As an installation art, it is an x-ray of human struggle in the process of putting food on their tables during the pandemic with perishable crops and vegetables. In expanding the scope of the project, I am collaborating with an Agriculturist from the Agricultural extension and rural development Department, University of Ibadan. And together, we came up with localized ideas of preserving perishables crops for future use as we are still in the period of uncertainty.

The interruption of the supply chain and other crops are now included in the intervention, which is now thought of as a solo exhibition that uses Agricultural products as material for artistic expression and intervention as the next decades usher us into season of unpredictability.

Conversation with Oyindamola Layo Fakeye , she is an Experiential Art Curator and Learning & Participation Producer working to facilitate contemporary art workshops, events and exhibitions. She is the current Executive & Artistic Director of the Centre for Contemporary Art, Lagos (CCA, Lagos), where she previously co-founded the Video Art Network Lagos, alongside artist Jude Anogwih and Emeka Ogboh (2009). Oyindamola is a Company Director for Res Artis the worldwide professional body for artists residencies, she sits on the board of Arts in Medicine Projects and is the Director of Special Projects for the Arts in Medicine Fellowship training Art and healthcare practitioners on best practices within the field.

The conversation with Uche Enechukwu ranges from Oyindamola's trajectory as the Director of Centre for Contemporary Art, the future objectives of the organisation and to possible means applying for funding .

A lot of people are archiving everything about them on social media and they do not know what becomes of the archive or how it’s being used by a third party without permission. Also quite a large number of internet users do not know the conversation around agency on individual data online and how to protect their data as well.

Short Bio of our guest:

Benneth Njoku is the lead consultant for Startegia Media Nigeria, an idea management firm that offers services in content development and digital solutions. Benneth specialises in marketing, content creation, responsive web design, and development. He has over 10 years of experience working in the industry and is passionate about helping businesses achieve their marketing goals.

Segun Adefila is an artist of Nigerian origin. His first encounter with the arts started from his childhood in his ancient hometown of Omu Aran in Kwara State(North Central Nigeria) where as a child he danced with masquerades during traditional festivals. This background has greatly influenced his art as a performance artist with a remarkable awareness of the potency of the arts as a veritable tool for social rejuvenation.

He had his informal training in theatre with Black Image Theatre Company after which he became a co-founder and artistic director of the Crown Troupe of Africa with a couple of friends in June 1996. In his quest for knowledge in the arts of theatre, Segun Adefila studied for a certificate in Drama from the defunct Centre for Cultural Studies, University of Lagos in 1997 and later obtained his B.A (2.1-Second Class Upper Division) in Creative Arts from the same institution in 2002. Segun Adefila began to gain recognition as a performer while in school winning awards at both departmental and professional levels with the Crown Troupe.

Some members of the group were invited by the National Troupe of Nigeria to perform at the maiden edition of Contacting The World, an international youth theatre festival hosted by Manchester based Contact Theatre in 2002. This was to be the group’s first international exposure overseas.

Tunde Pratt is a Lawyer, Project Consultant and Entrepreneur.

He was born and raised in Lagos Mainland, Lagos State and was privileged to start his Primary and Secondary School within the walls of the Prestigious University of Lagos, Akoka. He had a short time at the Yaba College of Technology before furthering his education in the United Kingdom.

He is contesting for the office of the Lagos State House of Assembly Member, representing Lagos Mainland II, under the banner of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) in the 2023 General elections.

He is passionate about good governance, regulatory change and promoting a clean environment. Having lived in Lagos Mainland for a few decades, he has both the experience and passion to bring accountability, promote environmental and economic change within his capacity as a legislator to Lagos Mainland. His main aim is to support Lagos State’s drive to deliver focused and qualitative governance, create an enabling environment for a public / private sector partnership through targeted legislation and refreshing of existing laws that promote equity, justice and fairness for the benefit of Lagos State residents. These are fundamental to the creation of economic development and individual prosperity of the residents of Lagos State.

His intention and strategy are to work with colleagues in the Lagos State House of Assembly regardless of party affiliations and strategic partners to put together a strategic framework to implement short, medium and long-term economic and social projects which bring people out of situational poverty with the reward of being the first of its kind to work or operate as such.

His educational achievement includes a Bsc in Business Information Technology, an LLB and an LLM in Company Compliance and Regulatory Law. He also possesses a handful of personal development training certificates in Business Analysis, Project management and Information Governance. He sits on the board of a number of private service providers delivering services such as training & recruitment, climate reduction strategy, bespoke business management and delivery initiatives.

Edaoto and the Afrogenius Band, led by Agbeniyi Edaoto; is a 5-piece band that plays Afrobeat. Afrobeat is a music form that has over the years ascended the apex of world music charts, because of its originality- propagation of African aesthetics and a blend of intellectual engagement that has culminated into a strong subset of world culture.

Since the band was established a decade ago, we have traversed the length and breadth of West Africa nations performing our art to standing ovations. A few of the fora in the culture calendar of Nigeria at which we have become regular performers are: French Cultural Center-Nigeria Television Authority’s 2009 World Music Day celebration.

We were part of the team of artistes that performed at the opening ceremony of the under 17 FIFAWorld Cup Nigeria 2010, French Cultural Center Showcase 2003, Goethe Institut- French Cultural Center’s 2011 World Music Day celebration; Ife Poetry Festivals, NaiJazz 2008, WordSlam’s Poetry Festivals etc

Edaoto was an international guest at the Harare Int. Festival of the Art (HIFA2012)Zimbabwe; Yoruba youth Congress, 2012, Detriot, MI, US. Bayimba International Festival of the Art, Kampala,Uganda 2012. Felabration Festival 2013 and a tour of Ethiopia (Dec 2013-Jan 2014) The Lagos Life Series is an evening of Afrobeat performance by our band that comes up every second Saturdays of the month, at specified venues.

Our Afrobeat songs have over the years become household-anthems, favoured by all and sundry. Our following continues to expand at unbelievable digits. This pedigree was entirely the outcome of our finesse and display of true understanding of the Afrobeat genre.

Indeed, our band has since transcended a commentary once made some years ago by an art critic that says: “Edaoto and the Afrogenius Band is a bomb awaiting explosion” (the Guardian Newspaper). We have not only blossomed, we are flourishing.
