Radio Ekisil FM, is a project of Turkana Voices. which means “ the champions of peace” in the local Turkana language, and is mainly targeting the local youths and the refugees with its messages aimed at preventing the recurrence of communal strife among the refugees and host communities in Turkana West Sub county, where a big refugee camp is located in Kakuma and Kalobeyei refugee integrated settlement. The Kakuma refugee camp and Kalobeyei settlement hosts over 160,000 refugees from South Sudan, Ethiopian, Uganda, Sudan, Congo DRC, Burundi and Somalia and with another 230,000 population of the local community in Turkana West.
The idea of establishing Radio Ekisil FM by Turkana Voices as a digital platform or medium was to assist in building the culture of peace and communal coexistence through its interactive programmes, the radio will also assist in communicating health education, agriculture, and animal rearing and will also provide entertainment. In addition, the radio will serve as a tool for humanitarian agencies in the area.
Radio is the most easily accessible and affordable means of interaction for the rural communities in Kenya.
