According to research from Canada, your motivating music helps your performance when it comes to tough workouts. The study published in the journal Psychology of Sport & Exercise, included 24 men and women who had to perform three 20-second sprints at maximum exertion. Between each set of three sprints, participants cycled for two minutes at low intensity (50 watts). The total time they practiced this was 10 minutes. This included a heating and a cooling. Participants did this workout three times: once while listening to "motivational" music - defined in the study as slightly more than 120 beats per minute (bpm). Once while listening to a podcast, and once while not listening to anything at all. Researchers found that when participants listened to the optimistic, motivating music, their heart rate and peak power were higher than when they listened to a podcast or no sound at all. In addition, participants reported that they liked the workout more afterwards when listening to music, compared to when they listened to a podcast or no sound at all.
