Pasadena, founded in 1874, is a city in Los Angeles County, California, United States. As of 2009, it had a population of 143,667 and a population density of 2,477.1 people per square kilometer. It is the sixth-largest city in the county.
Pasadena's original inhabitants were the Hhamogna Indians, a branch of the Tongva. Like many other Californian cities, Pasadena began as part of the territory of a Spanish mission, in this case the Mission of San Gabriel Arcángel. The territory passed from Spain to Mexico and was eventually transferred to different owners.
The city that would eventually become Pasadena was founded in 1873 by Thomas Elliot and a group of immigrants from Michigan, Indiana and Illinois who were looking for a warmer climate and cheap land. The origin of the city's name is believed to come from the language of the Chippewa Indians and means "crown of the valley" although this is not entirely clear. Pasadena was a key stop on the railroad line that linked Atchison to Santa Fe, which fueled its growth.
Pasadena was incorporated as a city in 1886. Today, voters elect the mayor since the 1999 election, while city council members have been elected by geographic district since the 1973 election.
Pasadena is known for its Tournament of Roses Parade every January 1, the Rose Bowl in college football, also held every January 1. It is home to the California Institute of Technology, the Jet Propulsion Laboratory and the Norton Simon Museum, which houses the collection of the tycoon of the same name, who was the husband of actress Jennifer Jones.
Pasadena hosted the 1994 World Cup final. The hard rock band Van Halen was also formed in the city in 1972 and Autograph in 1983.
