A frelichan Chanukah to all as the divisional races heat up and each matchup garners more meaning as the days fly off the 2025 calendar. Straight ahead on the Tuesday Morning JM in the AM Sports update, DRS and North Shore JV and Varsity basketball square off with a double-dose of overtime, a buzzer beater between Brooklyn teams that didn’t occur on the basketball court, and JV Hockey begins the final countdown with top seeds still open for business. All that and more, good morning, I’m Elliot Weiselberg.
We start out in Varsity Basketball, where there were several key contests at the top of the standings in both divisions. Frisch has rebounded from their recent loss to TABC and taken three straight with wins over YDE, JEC and a 20-point domination over Ramaz to improve to 11-2. Frisch now has the upper-hand as the Rams fall to 6-2 and with SAR at 6-3 and TABC at 6-4 following TABC’s 46-42 win Thursday night, the Cougars hold the division in their own hands when they meet up with the Sting at the end of January, however, with so much still left on the docket for the Rams, Sting and Storm, that game may very well also just be a coronation for Frisch as the kings of the West. Meanwhile, DRS widens their distance over Flatbush and Magen David taking a 52-44 overtime win over North Shore to go to 9-1. Flatbush and Magen David will both be in action on the limited schedule for the week ahead as Flatbush jogs over to YDE on Thursday night and the Warriors head to HANC on Monday, both currently at 6-1.
In JV Basketball, 9 games on the past week with several important games at the top of each division. In the West, TABC keeps pace with Frisch, knocking off SAR 64-54 to improve to 6-1. With Frisch’s wins over Kushner and JEC, the lone game left on their schedule will be their contest with TABC after the new year. Meanwhile, in the East, much like their varsity counterparts, North Shore and DRS needed extra time to settle their contest but North Shore sweeps their season series with DRS, taking out the Wildcats 57-54. The Lions attempted to make it 6 in a row last night against Magen David, but could not overcome the undefeated Warriors 63-50. North Shore’s only 2 losses have come to the undefeated Brooklyn teams. With the loss, we are guaranteed that at least the #1 seed in the East will run through Brooklyn.
Varsity Hockey saw several games this weekend, with contests among the top 6 teams in the league. DRS and TABC squared off in Woodmere this past Motzai Shabbos in another hard-fought, low-scoring affair, with the lone goal of the contest coming late in the second from the Wildcats’ Jacob Stern. Meanwhile, last night, only a mile away in HAFTR, the Hawks met up with the SAR Sting, with the Sting turning two man-advantages into scores in a 2-0 win over the host Hawks. The loss means that there are no more undefeated teams left in the East and DRS now sits 6 points above HAFTR at 9-1. Frisch and Ramaz also met up last night in a contest dominated by the Cougars from beginning to end, 7-0. The results put Frisch on the precipice of clinching a First-Round Bye and knocks Ramaz back into the pack where it will compete for seeding, now sitting 4 back with only 4 games left on their schedule. In the East, a classic in Brooklyn went down to literally the very last second as YDE rallied back from 2 goals down to tie Flatbush at 4, but a last second shot by the Falcons just beat the third period buzzer to give the Falcons the 5-4 victory. In other action, Ohr Yisroel picks up points, but not wins, taking two straight ties over Ramaz and MTA to go along with their lone point coming into the week from their overtime loss to SAR and YDE recovered from their loss with a 2-0 shutout over Rambam.
In JV hockey, only 5 games on the week as we are now under 20 total left in the regular season. HAFTR ended their two game Western losing streak with a statement 3-0 shutout win over 1st place SAR. The Hawk win puts them at 5-1-1-1 after suffering their only regulation loss to Frisch 3-1 earlier this week. The loss by SAR, drops them to 7-1 and now puts them in danger of having to get into a race with Frisch and TABC for a First-Round Bye. In other action, Ramaz pulls to within 1 game of .500 with a 6-4 win over YDE, upping their record to 4-5, which now means that their last game of the season against Flatbush in February could be for a playoff depending on the outcome of next week’s YDE- Flatbush contest and MTA’s remaining schedule. The Lions dropped to 2-4 following a 3-0 loss to still-undefeated TABC. And YDE rebounded from the loss with a 9-1 win over Rambam, eliminating the Ravens from playoff contention.
And that was your Tuesday Morning JM in the AM Sports Update, I’m Elliot Weiselberg.
