Thanks Nachum!
We are one day late for the JM in the AM Sports Update, but, as listeners know, the wait is usually worth it, and this one has allowed us to reach just about the half-way point of the winter sports season. Straight ahead, a massive Monday night schedule in varsity hockey, which included a marquee showdown of undefeated teams, Brooklyn running basketball on both levels and is it too early to start talking playoffs??? Our first spot clinched in JV Hockey. All that and more, happy Wednesday, I’m Elliot Weiselberg.
A light week in JV Basketball, but big on drama at the top where Magen David and Flatbush are going stride for stride in the East. Flatbush defeated HAFTR 64-45 to improve to 5-0, and the Warriors took wins over HANC and Solomon Schechter to jump to 4-0. Flatbush will have a chance to clinch a playoff spot tomorrow night when they square off with DRS. The Wildcats sit at 4-1, just behind both Brooklyn teams and could forge their own path to the top with a win.
The teams will also square off on the Varsity side where the situation is the exact opposite. DRS sits undefeated at 6-0 with Magen David behind them at 6-1 and Flatbush at 5-1 as both Brooklyn schools took key wins last night, The Falcons a 51-45 win over North Shore in what was a battle between two teams coming into the night with one loss and the Warriors overcoming HAFTR 62-56 behind Jacob Chami’s 22 points. In other action, Kushner gave Frisch a run, but ultimately the Cougars would remain at the top of the West following a 72-68 win improving to 7-1 and JEC takes two victories to jump back into the conversation in the middle of the West.
Moving over to Varsity Hockey which featured a packed Monday night, with so many implications that our one-day delay was necessary to break it all down, but no result more important than at the top of the West where the two undefeated teams, SAR and Frisch squared off. Early on, the visiting Sting took complete control with a 3-0 lead, but Frisch would put together a furious comeback in the last 6 minutes of the third and send the game to overtime where Cougar senior Daniel Margolius would complete the comeback for the 4-3 win and the 7-0 record. The loss for SAR their first blemish on the season, but an important point picked up with a game against Frisch still remaining on the calendar. Other important Monday night results saw Rambam turn away a Flatbush comeback with two late goals for a 7-4 win in Brooklyn, HAFTR continues their impressive streak, notching their fourth straight shutout, with a 1-0 win over HANC in a result that could impact the top of the East, and Kushner takes their first win, knocking off Ohr Yisroel with both teams looking to climb into contention over the second half.
Finally, our first postseason ticket has been punched as the JV Sting avoid the same fate as their varsity counterparts and buzz by Frisch 4-1 to improve to 7-0. SAR is the only team that can still attain a perfect season, and will spend the week and a half watching the rest of the JV League fall in behind them as they hold a 5 point cushion over TABC who sit at 4-0-1 with an important contest against HAFTR this coming Sunday night.
And that was your JM in the AM Sports Update, I’m Elliot Weiselberg.
