If I sound exhausted today, folks, I think you can understand, given the last 60 hours or so since Shabbos ended. Championship season took on new meaning this weekend with the Knicks bringing home their first NBA title in 53 years, and then again Sunday with 9 straight hours of hockey at the one of the most fun events on my yearly calendar, which, also found itself with a New York flare. We’ll get to that in just a moment
We have reached the 2nd to last Tuesday Morning JM in the AM Sports Update of the 2025-26 school year. Straight ahead, we set up the outdoor finals, and recap a fantastic day of hockey action at the 2026 Martin Weiselberg Memorial Hockey Tournament. All that and more, good morning, I’m Elliot Weiselberg.
The diamond sports are all down to their final games, several of which will occur this week, while one will actually not occur until after school has ended. We’ll start off with baseball where SAR and TABC turned in masterful performances over HANC and Frisch, each posting shutouts to meet up in the Baseball championship on Thursday night. The Storm and Sting met up at the end of April with TABC taking a 3-0 win on the way to an undefeated regular season. SAR, however, is looking to defend their crown as the 2025 league champion.
Moving over to Softball where we seem to have a bit of a Heat theme going on. In Varsity Boys softball, the Hillel Heat and Darchai Bulldogs will meet up in the championship game tomorrow night. Darchai edged out YDE 6-5 while Hillel dominated MAY 10-1. Hillel now looks for their 3rd banner in the last 4 years, while Darchei will attempt to earn their first since 2021. In Varsity Girls Softball both semifinals were runaways as 2024 champion Ma’ayanot drubbed Bruriah 10-1. The Rapids’ opponents will be the 2025 defending champion Hillel Heat, winners over Frisch, 14-4. Ma’ayanot dominated their regular season matchup 7-0 and will look to keep the Heat in check when they meet up. The last final on the docket belongs to JV Softball, which will feature the YDE Thunder and, surprise, the Hillel Heat. YDE outlasted Brooklyn foe Magen David 4-3, while Hillel thrashed HAFTR 6-5. Hillel will look to pick up their 2nd in 3 years and YDE their first since 2017. We will, however, not get the opportunity to cover this game, though, as it wont even actually happen during the school year! The game is slated for June 28th, after the school year had ended, presumably when all participants will be a little closer in proximity to each other. The last time a championship happened this late was July of 2022, when YDE and Hillel also met up, also in the JV Championship, so this setup is not new to these two squads.
For the final time this school year, we’ll head back indoors, and recap the action from the 20th anniversary edition of the Martin Weiselberg Memorial Junior High Hockey Tournament. The 18th iteration of the event, featuring 8 schools wound up being a New York affair. While both New York and New Jersey had participants in the semifinals, it would be two teams from Long Island, HANC and HALB, squaring off for the 4th time this year. HANC defeated Yavneh 2-1 in the semifinals, while HALB upended tournament favorite, Noam 3-2 in a shootout in their semifinals. In the finals, the Lions did what they could not do back in March in the very same HAFTR building that they played the New York championship in and shut down the Hurricanes 3-0 for HALB’s first tournament victory. Off the court, the tabulation continues, however, we are proud to announce that, once again, the teams smashed expectations and reached the goal of $10,000 for Hatzolah.
