Thanks Nachum!
We have reached the final week of the Spring outdoor sports regular season. Straight ahead on the Tuesday Morning JM in the AM Sports Update, a unique ending to a double-header leads to a tie atop the softball East and a three-way tie highlights the finish of JV Softball West. Indoors, the queens of hockey return to defend their throne while their varsity girls soccer counterparts go in the opposite direction. All that and more, good morning, I’m Elliot Weiselberg.
We’ll start off outdoors where the boys varsity softball East crown was determined in interesting fashion. It would just work out that Darchai Torah and Netzach Hatorah would be each other’s last games. With Netzach entering at 6-0 and Darchai at 5-1, Darchai supposed that the only way to win the division would be to defeat Netzach twice. Well it turns out there was more than one way. In the first game of the double-header the teams would work to an 11-11 tie meaning that the result of the final game would be the sole determining factor. This one would work out to a final result and it would be a 6-2 win for the Darchai Bulldogs pulling them into a tie with the Knights, but winning the head-to-head battle for the top spot. The Central and West wont have nearly as much drama, as Magen David finishes the season at 7-1 and Hillel, sits at 6-0, having clinched the West regardless of their last two games with Heichel on Sunday,
In JV softball, the YDE Thunder took 3 wins on the week, sweeping MTA and taking a game off of Hillel 3-1 to complete the sweep of the Heat and bump the Thunder, Heat and Magen David into a 3-way tie at 6-2. With all three teams sweeping each other, the tiebreak will come down to Strength of Schedule, which favors the Warriors, then Heat and in third, the Thunder. Meanwhile, HAFTR wrapped up the East at 7-0 with their game against Darchei on Sunday ending off the regular season.
Heading back indoors where all playoffs have already started, after a series of one-goal games to decide the play-in contests in varsity soccer, with Kushner defeating TABC 8-7 and HANC downing Flatbush 9-8, the quarterfinals started off with a bang as SAR demolished Westchester to advance to the semis where they will face the winner of Kushner and East top seed HAFTR. That along with the other bracket, featuring Ramaz in North Shore and Frisch hosting HANC will all take place tonight.
Meanwhile, Frisch and Ma’ayanot put together a girl hockey/soccer doubleheader in Frisch last night that saw one champion advance and the other fall. Hockey opened up the night with the top-seeded Cougars blanking the Rapids 4-0 to advance to their 4th straight final, with the chance to win their 4th straight title. They are a step ahead of the other half of the bracket who still await Ramaz and SAR in the quarterfinals with the winner to take on East top seed HAFTR. The second game of the night saw the teams square off in the soccer semifinals. Last year, Frisch shut out Ma’ayanot 4-0 on their way to the Soccer final. Last night, though, it would be the Rapids dominating with a 7-3 win to head back to their 2nd finals in the last 3 years. Like hockey, the other bracket is a step behind as quarterfinal contests between Ramaz and Heschel and SAR and North Shore will take place tonight and tomorrow, respectively.
The buzz around the 2026 Martin Weiselberg Memorial Junior High Hockey Tournament has started to pick up with the reveal of the biggest raffle prize list in the event’s history. This past week, the tournament’s website revealed the divisions and the schedule for the 20 year anniversary taking place in HAFTR on Sunday, June 14th. The day will begin with newcomers He’atid squaring off with tournament stalwarts Har Torah, while Yavneh and HANC, HAFTR- Moriah and Noam-HALB will round out the morning session. The afternoon will see Har Torah face Yavneh, He’atid match up with HANC in a battle of the Hurricanes, Noam will face HAFTR and HALB and Moriah will meet up in the battle of the Lions and to round out the round-robin session.
