Nachum Segal presents Elliot Weiselberg on JM in the AM to deliver the Yeshiva League Sports (YLS) Update. Tune in for the latest Yeshiva League hockey and basketball information, as well as, the occasional update on other sports happenings in the Jewish world. A transcript of this week's update is below.
Good morning and welcome to a special Yom Ha’atzmaut edition of the JM in the AM Sports Update. Straight ahead, the Route-4 Rivalry hits the soccer pitch, Ma’ayanot rises in girls hockey at a Rapid pace and Darchei Torah enters the conversation in Boys Softball. All that and more straight ahead. Good morning, I’m Elliot Weiselberg.
We kick off today’s festivities with boys varsity soccer where Frisch is still on top of the West, at 7-0, taking two on the week with a shutout over JEC, but also a “close” 7-3 win over TABC. Their Route-4 rivals are now 3-1, and join 3 other teams in the West with only 1 loss. SAR is 5-1 following a barn-burner with Kushner who took their first loss, now at 4-1 and Ramaz is 4-1-0-1 defeating Heichel Hatorah this past week. Girls varsity also sees Frisch at 7-0, having taken 3 of 3 this past week, outscoring Naaleh, SAR and Bruriah a combined 36-8.
In Girls Hockey, Ma’ayanot jumps back into playoff contention with two wins on the week, taking a 3-1 win over HAFTR and a 3-2 win over Ramaz. The Rapids sit at 4-2 with only Heschel and Central to finish off the year. Heschel currently sits in last in the West at 2-2, but will look to pull back over .500 tomorrow night against that Ma’ayanot squad and Central sits in a group of 4 1-win teams in the East that all look to be falling away from playoff contention. HAFTR rebounded from the loss to Ma’ayanot to defeat North Shore 8-1 last night and are now 3-1. The Hawks effectively need only 1 win in their remaining games to lock up the East.
In Boys Volleyball, North Shore climbs into a tie on top of the East with HAFTR at 4-0, taking wins over DRS and Magen David this week. The Lions, Hawks, Warriors and the Rambam Ravens have all opened up a bit of a gap on the rest of the league, with the remaining 4 teams in the East totaling only 2 combined wins. Meanwhile, a busy week ahead for West top team TABC who will play 3 games starting tomorrow night against Solomon Schechter, Sunday against SAR and Tuesday against Magen David. The winner of the game against SAR will have the inside track to the top seed in the division, with TABC clinching should they sweep all 3.
Moving outdoors, Darchei Torah opens up their Boys varsity softball season with 3 wins, knocking off HAFTR 10-8 and sweeping Nishmas on Friday. HAFTR rebounded from the loss also sweeping Nishmas this past Sunday. In the Central, Magen David took 2 on the week to jump to the top, while defending champion Hillel knocked off previously undefeated MTA to improve to 2-0.
And that was your JM in the AM Sports Update, I’m Elliot Weiselberg.
