This JM in the AM Sports Update is dedicated to my father Marty, Avraham Menashe Ben Dov Be’er Halevi, on this, his 20th Yehartzeit.
The final champions of the 2025-2026 winter season have been crowned with an all-western hockey affair. Today on the Tuesday Morning JM in the AM Sports Update, JV hockey sees another number added to the record books, and Varsity Hockey gives us some good old déjà vu. All that and more straight ahead. Good morning, I’m Elliot Weiselberg.
JV Hockey kicked off the final Sunday of the official Winter Sports Season as the top seed TABC Storm and 2nd seed SAR Sting squared off in Ben Porat Yosef in the first matchup of doubleheader Sunday. TABC jumped on the board early with two first-period powerplay goals, the first by Dovid Allen, and a minute later Ilan Katler putting last year’s runner ups ahead 2-0 midway through the first. The Storm would cruise through the first and most of the way through the second before SAR would find themselves on a man-advantage of their own and a beautiful pass from Gabe Kahn hit Judah Soniker on the tape for the slam home to cut the deficit to 1. The Sting would gain new life and increase the pressure against the top-seed, but Storm goalie Max Mauskopf would be stellar in net the rest of the way, as he was the entire game, earning MVP honors for the Storm who take home their 11th championship and second in the last 4 years completing an undefeated season.
The night-cap of the championship double-header would see the Route-4 Rivalry play out mid-way between both schools for the 2nd time in the last 4 years, as the two schools met up in 2022 in BPY to determine the champion. That year it was Frisch, the lower seed coming from behind to defeat TABC 5-3. This past Sunday it would be Frisch as the higher seed, the West #2 and TABC as the West #3 seed, and it would be the lower seed striking early as Jake Rubenstein would give the Storm the lead only 25 seconds into the contest. The early lead would not hold, as the Cougars, dominant all season went to work and would score three straight with two goals by Alex Pomerantz book-ending a Daniel Margulies snipe giving Frisch a 3-1 lead heading into the 2nd period. The Cougar dominance extended into the early moments of the 2nd as right off the faceoff, Frisch would score a goal as semifinal hero Ryan Teller slammed home a loose ball across the goal crease to make it 4-1. Zach Field would cut the deficit to two midway through the period, but the Storm would not score again. Margulies would add another goal late in the third for Frisch, and the Cougars would end off the 2025-26 Winter season with their 6th championship, alone for 4th all-time, breaking a tie they had held with TABC. Alex Pomerantz’s two goals and dominating presence in front of the TABC net all night earned him MVP honors for the Varsity Champions.
While the 2025-2026 Yeshiva League basketball season has wrapped up, the 2026 Red Saracheck Tournament kicks off this week at the Max Stern Athletic Center on the Campus of Yeshiva University. Yeshiva League Champion DRS Wildcats, the top seed, lead a group of 21 teams, including 9 from the Metropolitan area, this weekend to bring home the most coveted hardware in Yeshiva Basketball. Action begins tomorrow night with HANC and JEC battling in the play-in game. Official action begins on Thursday at 10 am when Fuchs Mizrachi takes on 3rd seed Frisch. You can catch all the action at Macslive.com.
And that was your Tuesday Morning JM in the AM Sports Update, I’m Elliot Weiselberg.
