Thanks Nachum!
The Olympics may be over, but the Yeshiva League still has yet to hand out its gold. Today on the Tuesday Morning JM in the AM Sports Update, Deuces were not wild this week, as 2 seeds fell all across the leagues, Frisch and North Shore trade off in Basketball, and TABC varsity hockey carves a different path for its current team, but not that much different from the others that have come before it. All that and more straight ahead, good morning, I’m Elliot Weiselberg.
Clearly given the weekend, the only natural place to start would be hockey. Varsity Hockey saw half of its final 4 set, first, with East top-seed DRS snuffing out the Ohr Yisroel Flames 7-1 on Long Island. A few miles away, though, the East #2 seed was not as fortunate. The HAFTR Hawks scored two powerplay goals, but trailed 3-2 entering the third to the TABC Storm, with HAFTR on a two-man advantage. Instead of being able to add a tally, the Hawks took a penalty of their own and TABC’s Jake Rubenstein would return the favor, opening up a 2-goal lead that TABC would not relinquish en route to a 5-2 final. This TABC squad shut out of the playoffs two years ago now awaits the winner of the HANC-SAR contest for its semifinal while DRS will square off with the winner of Frisch- YDE. Both remaining quarterfinals are set for tomorrow night.
Both boys JV Hockey semifinals are scheduled for this week as well. Top Seed TABC will meet up with 5th seed Frisch on Thursday night, while SAR will do battle with HAFTR tomorrow night. Ironically, neither higher seed has beaten the respective lower seed this season, as HAFTR defeated the Sting 3-0 back in December and TABC and the Cougars tied 1-1 in the early weeks of the season.
Similar to Varsity Hockey, Varsity Basketball saw a quarterfinal upset, as West #3 seed SAR rode 26 points from Max Weiss to a 73-51 win over Flatbush in Flatbush. The Sting will now return to Frisch, winners of a 62-46 contest with East #4 North Shore. The last time the teams met, SAR pulled off the upset, defeating Frisch by 12. A win here would send them on to their first final since March 2022 when they played Ramaz, who are also still in the hunt following an 11 point win over Magen David. They’ll square off with East top seed DRS, who knocked off Hillel this past Motzai Shabbos 52-43. The last time the Rams and Wildcats butted heads? December 2022.
In JV Basketball, no #2 seeds remain as we enter the semifinals. The Flatbush Falcons were upended by the Hillel Heat 54-46, ousting the defending champions and setting up an all-West affair with Top seed TABC following their dominating win over DRS. That game is scheduled for tomorrow night. On the other side, North Shore JV did what their varsity brethren couldn’t do, knocking off 2nd seed Frisch 60-54 to set up an all-East showdown with top-seed Magen David, 20-point winners over JEC. That contest is scheduled for Thursday night.
In Girls Varsity, Frisch heads back to the finals for the 4th year in a row, knocking off SKA in a rematch of the 23-24 championship by 3 points, 61-58. Frisch will now await the winner of tomorrow night’s contest between North Shore and SAR. A Sting win sets up a rematch of last year’s final, won by SAR.
The Cougars will make an evening of it this Sunday night in Kushner, as the JV squad will join the varsity squad in the finals, having knocked off Hillel 48-42. They await the winner of SAR and Ma’ayanot, scheduled for tonight. The JV Championship is slated for 4 PM on Sunday, while the varsity matchup will follow at around 6:15.
And that was your Tuesday Morning JM in the AM Sports Update, I’m Elliot Weiselberg.
