Thanks Nachum!
The last week of pre-winter break action is upon us. Straight ahead on the Tuesday Morning JM in the AM Sports update, Varsity Basketball ‘s field gets narrowed down to its final 12, JV Basketball seeds are rounding into shape, and Varsity East Hockey is one game away from seeing the first-round go through Brooklyn. All that and more, good morning, I’m Elliot Weiselberg.
We’ll start out with Varsity Basketball had the biggest slate this past week with 9 contests. In the East and West, the 6 playoff spots were all locked up. This week saw DRS with a victory over North Shore, Magen David with wins over North Shore and YDE, HANC with a win over Waterbury, and YDE, a loss to Ramaz, which eliminated the Thunder and locked in DRS as the #1 seed, Magen David, Flatbush, HAFTR and North Shore battling for 2-5 and HANC who will be on the road in the first round. Out West, Ramaz’s win over JEC eliminated the Thunder. The Rams will square off with SAR tonight and Heschel tomorrow night. A win over SAR will clinch the first round byes for Frisch and Ramaz and leave SAR fighting with MTA, Hillel and TABC all at 7 wins following Hillel’s loss to SAR and MTA’s win over Heschel.
Moving over to JV Basketball, which had 4 games this week. In the East, Magen David asserted their domination over the East downing DRS 71-44. Magen David is now 9-0 and is now only left with a battle with Flatbush for top spot in the division on the other side of the break. At the bottom of the playoff bracket, YDE dominated Rambam to improve to 5-4 and into a battle with HAFTR for the 5th and 6th spot in the division, which, like the top spot will come down to a battle between the two teams on the other side of the break. The 3rd and 4th seeds have already been decided, as North Shore, the 3, will host the loser of the HAFTR- YDE battle, and DRS, the 4 seed will host the winner. Out West, JEC knocked off Ramaz to move into a tie with the Rams for the 4th seed. Ramaz will take on 4-5 SAR tomorrow night. A Ramaz win will clinch a playoff spot for the Rams and Thunder with SAR awaiting Heschel’s home and home with MTA to see who will clinch. A win by SAR will make things much more interesting.
Finally, we move to Varsity Hockey where only four games happened on the week but all 4 carried playoff significance. In the East, YDE and Magen David walked away with wins over Ramaz and Solomon Schechter, respectively. Ramaz jumped out to a 3-0 lead on Saturday night before YDE broke out for 8 goals in an 8-5 win over the shorthanded Rams. The win helped the Thunder improve to 8-4 and clinched the 3rd seed in the East. For Magen David the 8-1 win last night helped put the Warriors in position to clinch the 4th seed with a win over the same Solomon Schechter out on Long Island tonight meaning that both East first round contests will occur in Brooklyn. A loss, tonight, however, would give HANC the opportunity to jump Magen David into the 4 seed. Either way, the 4/5 contest between Magen David and HANC would be set meaning that the sixth seed would be the last remaining open spot in the division and will belong to Rambam, Flatbush or North Shore on the other side of the break. Out West, SAR added to Ramaz’s misery last night with a 4-2 Sting win, the second on the week for the Sting who also dropped Kushner 7-1. The wins lock up a bye for both Frisch and SAR and Ramaz’s two losses to finish the season at 7-6-1 leave the 3 seed in TABC’s hands with TABC needing only two points in their final two games of the year.
With only 4 games among all 4 leagues over the next two weeks due to Yeshiva Break, the Tuesday Morning JM in the AM Sports Update will be on break as well. We will return for the home stretch and keep you informed of all the action when sessions resume at the end of January.
And that was your Tuesday Morning JM in the AM Sports Update, I’m Elliot Weiselberg.
