Panel: Why China carries on a 35-year diplomatic tradition toward Africa

World Today
About

Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi’s trip to Namibia, the Republic of the Congo, Chad and Nigeria has carried on a tradition greater than three decades long. Since 1991, China has embarked on its diplomatic calendar each New Year by sending its foreign minister to Africa.

China has remained Africa’s largest trading partner for 15 years. Remarkable dynamics are visible in the three-year action plan from the 2024 summit of the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation.

What’s at stake in Wang Yi’s Africa tour? How is China positioning itself in Africa’s future? Host Ding Heng is joined by Dr. Deng Yanting, Deputy Director of the Division of Security Studies at the China-Africa Institute; Emmanuel Matambo, Research Director of the Center for Africa-China Studies at the University of Johannesburg; Professor Zha Daojiong from Peking University’s School of International Studies.
