The cystoscope is typically inserted through the urethra and guided into the bladder. Before the procedure, the patient may receive a local anesthetic or sedative to reduce discomfort. Once the cystoscope is in place, the doctor can use the camera to view the interior of the bladder and urethra on a monitor, and may also use tiny surgical instruments to take tissue samples or perform other procedures if necessary.
