But Scripture paints a far more complex and nuanced picture. Terms like Sheol, Hades, Gehenna, the Pit, and the Lake of Fire are often treated as interchangeable, yet they describe different realities, different functions, and different moments in God’s unfolding plan. This podcast sets out to demystify the biblical doctrine of hell by carefully examining these distinctions. In the Old Testament, Sheol is presented as the realm of the dead—the underworld where all souls go after death, both righteous and wicked. It is not, at first, a place of final judgment, but a shadowy domain of waiting. As revelation progresses, we begin to see further clarity. In the New Testament, Hades carries this concept forward, but with more definition. It is depicted as having distinct regions: a place of comfort—often called Paradise or Abraham’s bosom—and a place of torment for the unrighteous.Beyond this, Scripture introduces additional terms that deepen the picture. Tartarus appears as a place of confinement for fallen angels. The Pit, the sides of the pit, and the “lowest hell” describe degrees of depth and judgment within this underworld reality. Even “the grave” at times overlaps with these ideas, though it can also refer more simply to the physical resting place of the body. All of this points to a crucial distinction: what many call “hell” is not a single, final destination, but a temporary holding realm—a place of conscious existence after death, awaiting judgment. The final judgment itself introduces something entirely different: the Lake of Fire.Unlike Sheol or Hades, the Lake of Fire is not described as a realm of waiting, but as the ultimate and eternal destination following judgment. It is here, after the Messianic Kingdom, that death and Hades themselves are cast into destruction. In other words, “hell” as a temporary realm is not the end of the story—it is itself brought to an end. This means there are two distinct phases often confused as one: a present, temporary underworld of the dead, and a future, final judgment in the Lake of Fire. This podcast will walk through these categories carefully and biblically, untangling centuries of conflation and assumption. What is Sheol? What is Hades? Where is Paradise now? What is Gehenna referring to? What is the Pit—and who is held there? And how does all of this lead to the final judgment after the thousand-year reign of Christ?By making these distinctions clear, we aim to present a view of hell that is not driven by tradition, imagery, or speculation—but by Scripture itself. This is not about softening the doctrine, nor exaggerating it. It’s about understanding it rightly.Because clarity matters—especially when it comes to eternity.
