In 1998, a British doctor, Andrew Wakefield, published a paper in the medical journal The Lancet that suggested a possible link between the MMR vaccine and the development of autism, alongside bowel problems. He pointed to what he said was a pattern: children developing normally, receiving the vaccine, and then experiencing a loss of skills. The paper was later retracted. Wakefield was denounced as a fraud and he was struck off the medical register.
Now, nearly 30 years later, the mother of one of the children in Wakefield's study has decided to speak out. Paula Aitken's son Colin was known as Child Number Four.
