The Day of the Lord Is Good News for Believers | Amos 8

"The Gospel for Living," with John Musgrave, M.Div.

About

What does the Day of the Lord mean for believers?

In Amos 8, the Day of the Lord is described as a day of darkness and judgment—but the death of Jesus shows us something astonishing: Christ experienced the judgment of the Day of the Lord in the place of His people.

In this message from Amos 8, we examine how the darkness that fell when Jesus died points back to the Old Testament Day of the Lord. Jesus, who was completely sinless, bore the judgment and curse deserved by His people.

Because Christ offered Himself once for sins and completed His work on the cross, believers can live in the assurance that there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus.

We also look ahead to the future Day of the Lord, when Jesus Christ returns. For those who reject Christ, that day will be a day of judgment. But for those who belong to Christ, it will be a day of blessing—the resurrection and renewal of body and soul, the renewal of creation, and the personal presence of God with His people forever.

This study of Amos 8 explores the Day of the Lord, the cross of Christ, judgment, forgiveness, the gospel, Christ's return, the resurrection, and the new heavens and new earth. It also demonstrates how the Old Testament prophets should be understood in light of their fulfillment in Jesus Christ.

Whether you are studying Amos, seeking to understand the Day of the Lord, thinking through biblical hermeneutics, or simply wanting to understand Scripture more deeply, this message traces the remarkable connection between Amos 8, the cross, and the return of Christ.
