God’s Good Care, Even in Hardship | Amos 9:1-10

Does God care for His people even when things are really hard?

Amos 9:1-10 gives us a powerful answer: even in judgment, hardship, suffering, and chaos, God does not abandon those who belong to Him.

In this sermon segment from Amos 9:1-10, we consider the special care and protection God gives to His people—even when destruction is happening all around them. Amos speaks of God shaking Israel among the nations, yet promising not to completely destroy the house of Jacob. God preserves His people.

That same truth appears throughout Scripture. We consider David's experience in 2 Samuel 15 and Psalm 23, when he was fleeing from his own son Absalom, walking through hardship and the “valley of the shadow of death.” Even under God's discipline, David could say, “You are with me.” God's care does not disappear simply because His people are suffering.

We also consider what this means when the visible church becomes smaller, when Christians are no longer part of the cultural majority, and when people we once thought were believers turn away. Jesus warned that some would be cut off, yet He promised that His kingdom would continue to grow. God's people may become few in number, but God remains faithful to them.

For Christians living in a chaotic and increasingly hostile world, this is an important encouragement: God's protection and care do not mean that His people will never experience hardship. They mean that He will never abandon those who belong to Christ. His care extends through this life, through death, and ultimately through final judgment.
