Honoring Heroes with the Manion WOD at enduraLAB with Bobbi Van Reet
The enduraLAB Podcast
What happens when fitness meets purpose? In our latest podcast episode, we dive deep into the Manion WOD – a grueling workout that tests your physical limits while honoring a true American hero.
Bobby Van Reet, Fort Worth Chapter Lead for the Travis Manion Foundation, joins us to share the powerful story behind this challenge. First Lieutenant Travis Manion was killed in Iraq on April 29, 2007, while protecting his platoon from enemy fire. His final words before deployment – "If not me, then who?" – now serve as the foundation's guiding ethos.
The workout itself is simple but brutal: seven rounds of 400-meter runs followed by 29 back squats, numbers specifically chosen to commemorate Travis's sacrifice. As Bobby explains, "Your legs don't move themselves and you're not quite sure how you're going to finish that run or those squats." But this shared struggle creates something remarkable – an unbreakable community bond.
Beyond the sweat and strain, your participation supports programs that develop character in youth, rebuild purpose for veterans, and serve community needs. We explore how the Travis Manion Foundation creates opportunities for "inspired civilians" and military families alike to make a difference through Character Does Matter mentoring and Operation Legacy service projects.
Whether you choose to run or ruck, lift heavy or scale as needed, the Manion WOD welcomes all fitness levels. We break down preparation strategies, recovery techniques, and what to expect during those 203 squats. The workout even features Travis's actual deployment playlist – a touching detail that connects participants directly to his legacy.
Register for the April 29th event at EnduraLab through travismanion.org and challenge yourself to embody the "If not me, then who?" spirit. Your legs might hate you temporarily, but your heart will thank you forever.
