Puerto Rico and U.S. Virgin Islands Surf Forecast: Three to Four Foot Waves Expected This Weekend
Surf Report San Juan Puerto Rico
About
Good morning, this is your Surf Zone Forecast for Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands, brought to you by the National Weather Service in San Juan.
Let's break down what's happening across our beaches this week, starting with the northern zones.
San Juan and the surrounding beaches are looking pretty chill today with around three feet of surf and low rip current risk. You'll catch mostly sunny skies with just isolated showers, so it's a solid day to get out there. East winds will be light, running five to ten miles per hour. Thursday picks up a bit with scattered showers and a few isolated thunderstorms rolling through, but the surf stays consistent at three feet. Come Friday, we're looking at three-foot waves with partly sunny conditions and scattered showers. By Saturday, the surf bumps up to around four feet with mostly sunny skies and just isolated showers. Sunday settles back down to three feet with more sun than clouds.
Over in the northeast, around Luquillo and Fajardo, expect similar conditions through the week. Three-foot surf dominates today through Friday, then Saturday brings us up to four feet. The winds gradually increase as we move into the weekend, topping out at fifteen miles per hour by Sunday.
Now heading north central, the beaches around Arecibo and Vega Baja are also starting with three-foot waves today, but Thursday brings numerous showers and isolated thunderstorms scattered throughout. The silver lining? Friday and Saturday see mostly sunny conditions with four-foot surf on Saturday. Sunday cranks up to four feet of surf with sunny skies.
The northwest zone, which includes Aguadilla and Isabela, follows a similar pattern with three-foot surf through Friday, then bumping to four feet for the weekend. Friday's the only day with more substantial rain in the forecast, bringing numerous showers and isolated thunderstorms, so plan accordingly.
Shifting to the western side of the island, Mayaguez and the surrounding communities are running smaller with two-foot surf today and tomorrow, but don't let that fool you. Thursday and Friday bring numerous showers with isolated thunderstorms, so the weather will be the main factor. Surf gradually builds to three feet Saturday and moderates to two feet Sunday.
The southwest corner around Cabo Rojo is also starting with two-foot waves today, but here's where it gets interesting. This zone stays sunny through most of the week with just scattered showers Thursday and isolated showers other days. By Sunday, the surf climbs to four feet with continued sunny conditions, making it potentially the best day all week if you're in that area.
Down south near Ponce, expect similar small surf to the southwest through Friday, then the coast ramps up to three feet Saturday and four feet Sunday. The trend here is sunny skies dominating with minimal rain, making this another excellent zone for weekend beach time.
The southeast beaches around Arroyo and Maunabo start at two feet today, building to three feet by Friday and four feet by Sunday. Mostly sunny to partly sunny conditions throughout the week with scattered showers Thursday and isolated showers other days.
Out on the islands now, Culebra is starting with two-foot surf today, staying small through tomorrow, then building to three feet Friday and four feet Saturday and Sunday. Thursday's a bit messy with mostly cloudy conditions mid-day, but it clears out. Winds pick up as we head toward the weekend, reaching twenty miles per hour Saturday.
Vieques follows the same trend as Culebra with two-foot surf today and tomorrow, then jumping to three feet Friday and four feet through the weekend.
In the U.S. Virgin Islands, St. Thomas and St. John start at two feet today with mostly sunny skies and light winds. Thursday and Friday bring scattered showers with winds picking up to fifteen miles per hour. Saturday and Sunday moderate to three-foot surf, but the winds stay elevated at twenty miles per hour.
St. Croix is offering slightly better waves from the start with three-foot surf today and tomorrow. By Friday, we're looking at four-foot waves, and the weekend delivers the same with sunny skies and stronger easterly winds around twenty miles per hour.
Throughout the forecast area, rip current risk remains low across all zones, though remember that life-threatening rip currents can still develop near groins, jetties, reefs, and piers even when risk is low.
The overall pattern shows a typical early summer setup with low rip current risk, light to moderate winds, and scattered showers, particularly Thursday. Surf builds gradually as we head into the weekend with the best conditions likely Saturday and Sunday, especially in the southern zones and the Virgin Islands.
Stay safe out there and check back for updates as conditions continue to evolve.
