High Rip Current Risk Puerto Rico US Virgin Islands Through Sunday Seven Foot Surf Advisory

Surf Report San Juan Puerto Rico

About
Good morning everyone, this is your surf zone forecast for Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands, brought to you by the National Weather Service in San Juan.

We're tracking a high rip current risk in effect through Sunday afternoon for most of our northern and eastern zones. If you're planning to hit the water this weekend, pay close attention to these conditions.

Starting with our northern zones, we're looking at consistent seven foot surf throughout today and Saturday across San Juan and vicinity, the Northeast, and North Central areas. The Northwest and Culebra will also see seven footers, while Mayaguez stays around six feet. These aren't massive waves, but combined with the high rip current risk, swimmers and waders need to exercise extreme caution. Always remember that life threatening rip currents are likely in the surf zone under these conditions.

The southern zones tell a different story. Southwest Puerto Rico and Ponce are looking at much calmer conditions with just two to three foot surf and low rip current risk. Southeast Puerto Rico also remains low risk with three to four foot waves. If you're down south, conditions are definitely more forgiving.

Weather-wise, expect a typical tropical pattern. We're seeing scattered to numerous showers throughout the region with isolated thunderstorms developing, particularly on Saturday and Sunday. Morning clouds will give way to some sun, but don't count on clear skies for long. East winds will range from five to twenty miles per hour depending on your location, with the strongest winds in our eastern zones like Culebra and Vieques.

By Monday, surf heights drop slightly across the board as we transition to five to six foot conditions in the north and three to four feet in the south. The rip current risk diminishes as well. Tuesday shows further decline with four to five foot waves in northern zones and three to four feet in the south. Rip current risk returns to low or moderate levels.

The U.S. Virgin Islands are experiencing similar conditions to our eastern Puerto Rico zones. St Thomas, St John, St Croix, and surrounding islands are all under the high rip current risk through Sunday with six foot surf today and Saturday. Winds are running fifteen to twenty miles per hour out of the east.

Bottom line: if you're venturing into the water, stay alert. Rip currents don't care how good a swimmer you are. Always keep an eye on changing conditions and never turn your back to the ocean.
