La época victoriana representa como ninguna otra la doble moral, por un lado una moralidad y sexualidad pública muy estricta, totalmente basada en una moral y en unos valores profundamente conservadores, y se vanagloriaban del desprecio al sexo como una forma de placer, dando lecciones de disciplina y moralismo. El ámbito privado es todo lo contrario y se produce una sexualidad promiscua y alocada.
