3300: South Sudan Women Leaders Propose Gender Equality Body to Monitor Quota Implementation
Radio Miraya
About
Women leaders and activists in South Sudan are calling for stronger action to ensure the implementation of the 35% quota for women’s representation agreed under the peace deal. During discussions organised by the South Sudan Women Coalition with support from UNMISS, participants raised concerns over weak implementation and the removal of women from leadership positions, often replaced by men. They proposed creating a gender-equality monitoring body and a real-time database of women leaders to strengthen accountability. Participants also stressed that women’s participation must move beyond symbolic representation and become central to peacebuilding and governance efforts. In conversation with the Miraya Breakfast Show from the South Sudan Women Coalition are Dr Lona James Elia and Dr Sihan Mohamed Osman.
