The Franciscan Hour – What Is the Best Biography of St Francis? – Fr Peter George Flynn

Few figures in history have had more biographies written about them than St Francis, so Fr Peter George Flynn sets out to say which ones are worth reading. He starts with Thomas of Celano, who knew Francis personally and also wrote one of the most famous chants in the Church's repertoire, and moves on to St Bonaventure, whose official life came with an order that every other version be destroyed. How the earlier lives survived anyway, and why a Protestant scholar's book ended up on the Index, are part of the story; Fr Peter then names the twentieth-century biography he loves most.
