What does it mean to belong to a “lost generation”?

In this episode of Quietly Autistic at Last, Dr. Allison Sucamele explores late-diagnosed autism, ADHD, and AuDHD through an unexpected literary lens: Erich Maria Remarque’s All Quiet on the Western Front. Inspired by neurodiversity advocate Ellie Middleton’s words about a generation who “were never diagnosed when we should have been,” Dr. Sucamele reflects on why the phrase lost generation stopped her in her tracks.

The experiences of war and late neurodivergent diagnosis are not equivalent, and this episode does not suggest that they are. Instead, it explores a haunting shared question: What happens when an entire generation reaches adulthood realizing that the systems meant to understand, guide, and protect them never truly saw them?

Through literature, psychology, education, and personal reflection, this episode examines missed recognition, masking, grief, identity, adaptation, and the complicated experience of finally finding language for a life that once felt impossible to explain.
