About this episode

On this episode of Pop Music For Smart People I am featuring Indigenous music artists from across the globe. The artists being featured today are Otyken, The Halluci Nation, UUTAi, Olox, Snotty Nose Rez Kids and Electric Fields. All of these Indigenous artists are creating music that infuses the traditional sounds of their tribes and communities with current music sounds and genres such as edm, pop music and house music. These artists are implementing cultural vocal techniques such as throat singing and chanting as well as performing with traditional Indigenous instruments such as animal hide drums, wooden flutes and whistles and the jaw harp. Using these traditional methods and instruments they are creating beats and tracks that sound like current music especially electronic popular music. Along with making music all of the Indigenous people featured on this episode are activists for their communities and are involved in movements addressing climate change, cultural appropriation, Indigenous peoples' human rights, land return to Indigenous communities and raising awareness about missing and murdered Indigenous women and girls(MMIWG). Below are some links to educational resources surrounding these communities and issues. There are also some links to organizations and foundations you can donate to or volunteer for if you can. Come and listen to some of the amazing music being created by Indigenous artists from around the world including the US, Canada, Siberia and APY lands of Australia.
