About

Ihumātao, the sacred site in south Auckland, was seized by the crown in 1863, and sold to the private developer Fletcher Building in 2016, which planned to build houses on the land. Protestors have been occupying the site on and off since 2015, demanding the crown intervene and hand the whenua (land) back to Māori.
