🎙️ Episode: KnowingWhat You Don’t Know
The Blind Spot WeAll Have
Start with a provocative question:
“What if the things holding us back in life are not thethings we know… but the things we don’t even know we don’t know?”
You could introduce the idea of three levels of knowing:
That third space is where our blind spots live.
And this is particularly important for leaders because thehigher we move, the easier it can become for people to stop telling us whatwe don't want to hear.
Tip #1 — Be Curious, Not Certain
Self-awareness starts with recognizing:
“I might be wrong.”
We naturally seek information that confirms what we alreadybelieve. But growth requires us to become comfortable asking:
Leadership tip: Replace “I know” with “Helpme understand.”
That one sentence can completely change a conversation.
Tip #2 — Invite Feedback, Especially the UncomfortableKind | 2 min
One of the greatest challenges for leaders is that feedbackbecomes less honest as authority increases.
People may tell the boss:
“Everything is fine.”
While thinking:
“Actually… there are several things you don't see.”
So don't just ask:
“Do you have any feedback for me?”
Ask better questions:
And perhaps most importantly:
Don't punish people for telling you the truth.
If people get attacked every time they challenge you, eventually they'll stop challenging you.
Tip #3 — Know Your Strengths AND Your Shadows | 2 min
Self-awareness isn't just knowing your strengths.
Sometimes our strengths become our weaknesses whenoverused.
For example:
A powerful reflection question is:
“When does my strength become too much of a good thing?”
This is a great leadership question because our blindspots often hide behind our strengths.
