Teflon is toxic and cooking tools are recycled electronics? What tools to toss and why
Know It All with Peggy Bunker
Stop what you're doing and toss your teflon! Because black pigment is incredibly easy to dye, factories often use ground-up plastic from old electronics to cut costs.....this is mind-blowing! You might be making your morning eggs with someone's recycled hard drive. Even worse, these black electronics are doused with flame retardants that do not break down during the recycling process. Then, heat them up while cooking, and the risk of chemical transfer increases significantly as utensils are exposed to high heat, such as stirring hot oil or leaving the utensil resting inside a hot pan. Lastly, like many plastics, heated or damaged utensils can also shed microplastics directly into your meals, where they are forever stored in your body. All of it - gross AND dangerous to your health.
