About this episode

There’s a lot written about the importance of Legacy to each of us but how do you maintain a legacy from the past, live it in the present and preserve it and evolve it for the future?

To answer this, Phil was once again joined by three wonderful IOH members in Eloise Hanson AIH, Sarah Powell MIH and Christopher Hogan FIH.

Before they got stuck into this month’s topic, our guests gave us some brilliant reasons to say I’m in to the IOH including: -

It was a no brainerTo learn from the knowledge of othersThe company and comradeshipKnowledge sharingThe great eventsTo be able to facilitate and be part of great conversations around hospitality

As always, there were some superb points raised by our panel including: -

Maintaining the history of the building can be crucial to your guests and their reason for visiting in the first placeManaging the cost of maintenance can be eye watering so you must manage guest expectation with what’s possible, especially in the face of the moment we are living inLegacies are there to be createdThere are no shortcuts to maintaining legacy, it’s a constant focusYour people are critical to the building’s legacy, They are the key to unlocking the full potential of that legacyBe focused on leaving things in a better place than you found itBalancing public opinion v owner vision needs constant attentionIt’s critical to listen to the guest’s feedbackSometimes you have no choice but to adapt owing to law changes or technological advancementsLooking ahead by 50 years can give you an insight into what your guest of the future will need from the legacy of your buildingLegacy can be more about the future than the pastKeeping all the generations happy is no doubt difficult but finding a balance is keyEstablish what you want the property or yourself to be known for and everything will contribute much easier after thatIt’s important to map out the company legacy so that it’s easier to get people on board that should be with you on that journeyEmbracing tech to be part of your legacy can really add value to tradition

A huge thank you to our guests for giving up their time and opinion.

Enjoy!
