Ben Sorer UMoreh — A Message for Parents
The Gemara in Sanhedrin 71a says that according to Rabbi Shimon, “Ben Sorer UMoreh never existed and never will exist.” If so, why did the Torah teach us this entire parashah?
One of the messages is found in the words: “He does not listen to our voice.” Rashi explains that the parents must have an equal voice.
A child does not grow in a vacuum. Before we call a child rebellious or say that he is leaving Torah, we have to look at the home.
Does the child feel safe? Is there peace between the parents? Do the parents respect each other and give the child a clear direction?
When a home is filled with fighting, pressure, and contradictions, a child may begin looking outside for the security, belonging, and acceptance that he does not find at home.
This is especially important when we talk about children who are struggling spiritually. Sometimes they are not simply running away from Torah—they are running away from the tension and chaos of the home.
There also needs to be clarity in the spiritual leadership of the home. The father should have a clear role as a spiritual leader and authority, and the mother should respect and strengthen that role. When one parent constantly undermines the other—even without bad intentions—the child may feel that there is no clear leadership and no one to rely on.
This does not mean that a woman has no wisdom, opinion, or spiritual responsibility. Quite the opposite. But each parent has a role and responsibility, and when they strengthen rather than weaken each other, the child receives security, stability, and direction.
Before we ask, “What is wrong with this child?”, we should also ask:
“What is this child experiencing at home?”
Sometimes, in order to help the child, we first need to heal the home.
