About

Be Honest From the Beginning

Unfortunately, one of the causes of serious problems in young marriages is that parents sometimes refuse to see their own child for who they really are.

A shidduch can become less about the child’s future and more about the parents’ ego, reputation, status, money, family name, or what the neighbors will say.

The parents may feel successful when the engagement and wedding happen. But after the wedding, the young couple—not the parents—has to live with the reality.

Don’t Sell a Child

Hiding or minimizing important information about a child’s emotional, medical, educational, or personality challenges can create a time bomb.

The truth eventually comes out.

And when one spouse discovers that important information was hidden, the damage is not only the problem itself. The trust that a marriage depends on may be destroyed.

Know Your Child

Parents need the courage to look honestly at their child.

Not every boy fits every lifestyle. Not every girl fits every type of home. Every person has a different personality, emotional makeup, pace, strengths, weaknesses, and aspirations.

A successful shidduch is not about finding two impressive families on paper.

It is about finding two people who are genuinely compatible.

The Goal Is the Marriage

The purpose of a shidduch is not to “close the deal.”

The purpose is to help two young people build a healthy home.

Honesty is not a weakness. Honesty is protection.

A parent who truly loves their child should want the other side to know the child as they really are—not as the parent wishes them to appear.

Instead of asking, “How can we make this shidduch happen?”

we should ask:

“Who is my child really, and who will truly be compatible with them?”

Instead of asking, “What will people say?”

we should ask:

“What will happen to this couple after the wedding, when they are alone together?”

If we want to prevent unnecessary heartbreak and reduce the number of young marriages that fall apart, we need to change the mindset:

Don’t sell the child. Understand the child.

Don’t protect your image. Protect your child’s future.

Be honest from the beginning.
