How Can a Good Person Have an Affair? With Kristina Joy

FLAUNT! Create a Life You Love After Infidelity or Betrayal

About

How can someone who sees herself as a good person—a loving wife, devoted mother, woman of faith—have an affair?

And how can she keep going back when she knows what she's doing is wrong?

Those questions can be almost impossible to understand from the betrayed side of infidelity. We look at the choices our partner made and think, I would never do that. If you knew it was wrong, why didn't you just stop?

My guest Kristina Joy knows exactly what that feels like from the other side.

Kristina spent years living a life that didn't feel like her. Her affair didn't begin with a conscious decision to blow up her marriage. It developed through a series of choices that were easy to rationalize at the time—until secrecy, shame, unmet needs, self-deception, and a relationship that made her feel alive had become something she couldn't seem to simply walk away from.

In this incredibly honest conversation, Kristina takes us inside that experience.

We talk about what it means to feel stuck in an affair, why willpower isn't always enough to get out, how otherwise good people rationalize choices that conflict with their values, and the shame that can keep the unfaithful partner isolated long after they know they need help.

Kristina also talks candidly about something betrayed partners rarely get to hear about: grieving the affair partner after the affair ends.

Understanding any of this does not mean excusing infidelity.

But if you're trying to understand how someone you believed was a good person could make choices that caused so much damage, this conversation offers a perspective we don't hear nearly enough.

Top 3 Takeaways

Affairs don't always begin with one enormous decision.

Kristina describes a progression of seemingly small choices—giving someone a ride, spending time with different people, staying out late, withholding information, crossing another line and promising herself it wouldn't happen again. One of the most important distinctions she makes is between asking, Was this technically wrong? and asking, Was this wise? The secrecy became an important dividing line. When you wouldn't willingly tell your partner what you're doing, something has changed.

Shame can keep someone stuck in the very behavior they're ashamed of.
Kristina knew women she could theoretically talk to, but she was terrified of what would happen if she told the truth. Would they judge her? Would they tell her to end the affair immediately? Would they force her to confront decisions she wasn't ready to make? So she stayed alone. Her story changed when she finally found people who could hear the truth without condoning her behavior and without shaming her for it. That distinction matters: compassion is not the same thing as approval.

Betraying someone else can also destroy your trust in yourself.

One of the most powerful moments in our conversation comes when Kristina realizes that she wasn't only the betrayer in her story. She had betrayed herself too. After the affair, she had to learn whether she could trust herself around other men, trust herself to honor her own commitments, and trust herself to live according to the values she believed in. And that's something both sides of betrayal may eventually have to rebuild: the ability to trust themselves again.

About Kristian Joy

Kristina Joy is a coach who works specifically with women who have been unfaithful and are ready to step out of shame, secrecy, and self-condemnation and back into honesty, integrity, faith, and self-trust.

Her work grew out of her own seven-year journey through infidelity and the years of healing that followed. Drawing from her lived experience as well as her work with women, Kristina takes a holistic approach to healing that includes faith, mindset, emotional awareness, the nervous system, and the body.

At the heart of her work are two words she returns to again and again: curiosity and compassion. She creates a space where women can tell the truth about what they've done, understand what was happening within them, take responsibility for what belongs to them, and begin rebuilding a relationship with themselves without being defined by the worst choices they've made.
