Flags, Fists, and Fury: The Hard Hat Riot Returns to the Spotlight on PBS
Film Festival Radio
Launching September 30th on PBS, PBS.org, the PBS app, and PBS Documentaries on Prime Video, Hard Hat Riot revisits the explosive 1970 clash between anti-war student protestors and construction workers in New York City. It was a cultural event that reshaped the American political landscape. The film explores deep-rooted class tensions between working-class laborers and educated elites, the shifting role of labor unions, and proposes that history is repeating itself. Martin Scorsese is not in the documentary but there's archival footage of him featured in the film. In May 1970, Scorsese was a film student at New York University (NYU) and, along with other students like actor Harvey Keitel, he recorded the events of the protests and clashes that week.
Hard Hat Riot sparks urgent conversations about identity, division, and the enduring fault lines in American society. Guesta are - MARC LEVIN (DIRECTOR/PRODUCER/WRITER) and DAVID PAUL KUHN (AUTHOR/CO-PRODUCER). premieres Tuesday, September 30, 2025, 9:00-10:30 p.m. ET (check local listings) on the American Experience series.
