About
Christy Turlington is an American model and activist. She was discovered at 14 by a photographer whilst horseback riding. Moving to New York aged 18, she became one of the famous “Supermodels” of the 1990s alongside Linda Evangelista, Naomi Campbell, Claudia Schiffer and Cindy Crawford. She appeared in George Michael’s groundbreaking Freedom! ‘90 music video alongside Naomi, Linda, Cindy, and Tatjana Patitz. Christy Turlington has appeared on more than 500 magazine covers worldwide and walked in hundreds of shows for designers including Versace, Calvin Klein, Chanel, Valentino, Vivienne Westwood and Azzedine Alaïa. In 1995 she was the subject of a documentary directed by Ricky Leacock entitled Catwalk, which followed her during a season of Paris Fashion Week in 1993.

Christy Turlington has a degree from NYU in comparative religion and Eastern philosophy, and an MA in Public Health from the Columbia Mailman School of Public Health. She authored the book  Living Yoga: Creating A Life Practice in 2002 and edited the 2022 book, Arrival Stories: Women Share Their Experiences of Becoming Mothers. She serves on the Harvard Medical School Global Health Council and as an advisor to the Harvard School of Public Health Board of Dean's Advisors. In 2010, she directed the documentary No Woman, No Cry about maternal health, inspired by her experience of childbirth-related complications in 2003, and in the same year founded her charity Every Mother Counts, which is dedicated to making pregnancy and birth safer for all women.

Christy Turlington received the Distinguished Alumni Award from NYU and has been one of Time’s 100 Most Influential People and Glamour Magazine’s Women of the Year.

In this episode of Fashion Neurosis, Bella Freud and Christy Turlington discuss being roommates with Naomi Campbell, whether George Michael had a crush on Linda Evangelista, and advocating for women’s health.
