Igual que de manera espontánea surgió el movimiento Paisley Underground, otro colectivo de músicos estadounidenses se unió en torno a lo que se conoció como Elephant 6, que era la abreviatura de Elephant Six Recording Company que engendró algunas de las más notables bandas de la escena independiente de Estados Unidos en la década de 1990.
Elephant 6 es una compañía de grabación, un sello discográfico, un movimiento estético, un colectivo musical, una comuna, un mito y sobre todo una visión utópica de la creación musical. Una comunidad de artistas y músicos que encontraron un lugar para crear arte y experimentar musicalmente sin ninguna pretensión de alcanzar el éxito comercial, dando rienda suelta a su fuerza creativa y compositiva.
