Hack Your Home: Netflix Star Jess Banks on Storage Hacks & Why Your House Isn't Designed for You | Clutterbug Episode #344
Clutterbug - Real-Life Hacks and Tips to Declutter, Organize and Clean your Home Fast
About
Looking for small space storage hacks and home organization ideas that actually make sense for how you live? In this episode, I sit down with Jess Banks — robotics engineer, furniture designer, and star of Netflix's Hack Your Home — to talk about why homes fail us, and the small, genius hacks that can fix it.
Jess has an insane background — physics, robotics, running her own kinetic furniture company — and she brings all of it to how she thinks about storage and space. We get into why "messy" isn't actually a character flaw (it's just a mismatch between your brain and your space), how to design furniture and storage that flexes for visual vs. hidden organizers, and why she thinks almost every home is missing a few key pieces of smart storage.
We also get into:
✨ Why homes are never really built for how any one person actually lives — and what to do about it
✨ The "touchpoint" method for deciding what deserves prime real estate vs. deep storage
✨ Jess's ADHD, her own visual-but-contained organizing style, and how she's "hacked" her own space to work with her brain instead of against it
✨ Why multi-purpose furniture (like a table that folds flat into the wall) might be the small-space answer we've all been missing
✨ Her surprisingly brilliant trick of using different scents to help her brain context-switch between creative, analytical, and admin work
If you've ever felt like your clutter is somehow your fault, this conversation is a great reminder: it's not you, it's your storage.
