Ալեքսանդր Շիրվանզադեն (1858–1935) հայ իրապաշտական (ռեալիստական) արձակի և դրամատուրգիայի ամենախոշոր դեմքերից է։ Նրա ստեղծագործությունը մի ամբողջ դարաշրջանի գեղարվեստական տարեգրությունն է։ Շիրվանզադեն հայ գրականություն ներմուծեց քաղաքային կյանքը և կապիտալիստական հարաբերությունները։ Նրա ուշադրության կենտրոնում Բաքվի նավթաշխարհն էր, փողի կործանարար ուժը և հին ու նոր բարոյական արժեքների բախումը։ Նա համարվում է հայ հոգեբանական վիպագրության հիմնադիրը։ Շիրվանզադեն վարպետորեն վերլուծում է մարդկային ներաշխարհը, կրքերը և սոցիալական միջավայրի ազդեցությունը անհատի վրա։ Նրա կերպարները սովորաբար բարդ են, հակասական և կենդանի։

Alexander Shirvanzade (1858–1935) stands as one of the most prominent figures in Armenian realistic prose and drama. His body of work serves as a profound artistic chronicle of an entire era, capturing the seismic shifts in Armenian society at the turn of the 20th century.

Shirvanzade is credited with introducing urban life and capitalist social relations into Armenian literature. His narratives primarily focused on the industrial "oil world" of Baku, exploring the destructive power of money and the inevitable clash between traditional moral values and the burgeoning modern world.

He is considered the founder of the Armenian psychological novel. Shirvanzade masterfully analyzed the human inner world, dissecting complex passions and the heavy influence of social environments on the individual. His characters are typically multi-layered, contradictory, and deeply authentic.
