About

In Chinese, you can “eat” many things.
You can eat vinegar (吃醋 — to be jealous), eat tofu (吃豆腐 — to flirt), even “eat fragrance” (吃香 — to be popular).

You can also “eat bitterness” (吃苦). It means to endure hardship, to work hard.

The problem for China’s younger generation is not that they are unwilling to eat bitterness. It’s that there is no bitterness left to eat.

Today, many young people no longer see a clear pathway to success — the kind the previous generation once seemed to enjoy. The link between effort and upward mobility feels broken.

Today, we’re shining a light on this generation with a privileged witness that has been touring the country for the last two years : Alessandro Ceschi.
