Why Your Portraits Look Stiff with PETER COULSON - Episode 329

Peter Coulson returns to Camera Shake for a candid conversation about what makes portrait photography feel alive. He explains why directing a person goes beyond arranging a pose, and how movement, attention and the right words can help you capture genuine expression.

In episode 329, we explore reading facial cues, working with experienced models and everyday clients, and recognising the moment worth photographing. Peter shares why he avoids telling people to hold, how he uses video to encourage natural movement, and when showing someone a strong image can build their confidence.

We also discuss one light portrait lighting, natural light, commercial photography briefs and keeping rapport when a shoot hits a technical problem. For anyone building a photography business, the conversation offers practical insights into client communication and the experience you create in front of the camera. If you work in videography, the discussion of movement, emotion and directing people offers useful crossover ideas too.

Whether you photograph headshots, fashion or personal portraits, this episode invites you to observe more closely and rethink the instructions you give.
