And the science finally agrees. A research team at the University of Michigan published a paper in Nature Medicine reviewing nearly 300 studies across 36 countries. Their conclusion: ultra processed foods hijack the brain's reward system. They trigger cravings, loss of control, and continued use despite harmful consequences. Those are the exact same diagnostic criteria used for cocaine, alcohol, nicotine, and gambling. The FDA and National Institutes of Health have now launched a joint initiative modeled after the Tobacco Regulatory Science Program applying the same addiction science framework to food that they applied to cigarettes.
For 40 years the conversation was about calories, exercise, and portion control. The whole time the food itself was engineered to be addictive.
