AI With Honor: The Fear Gap, And What The August Jobs Report Actually Said

On Wednesday about 2,000 people walked off the job at the University of Sydney. Not over pay. They walked out over one sentence their own employer wrote, describing a future where AI gives students personalized support and staff to student contact hours go down.

Connor MacIvor names the two industries selling fear and shows who gets paid by each. The labs sell it upward, buy the plan. The pulpits and podcasts sell it downward, subscribe and vote. Both survive on the distance between what you feel and what anybody can measure. He calls that the fear gap, then measures it.

The August employment report added 162,000 jobs against a forecast near 53,000. Exactly one sector lost jobs: Information, down 23,000. Meanwhile 40 percent of workers surveyed by Mercer say they fear losing their job to AI, up from 28 percent in 2024.

Surveys measure feeling. The 23,000 measures what happened. But he does not stop there, because Information is precisely where these models are strongest, and it is the only sector that shrank.
