AI Fear, Facts, and the Workflows That Actually Help

Artificial intelligence is going to kill everybody. Or it will create abundance. Or it will replace every worker. The loudest version depends on who is speaking and what keeps us watching.

Connor MacIvor works through the fear without pretending the risks are imaginary. Former OpenAI and Anthropic researcher Jacob Coxon publicly resigned and warned that the AI race could endanger humanity. The resignation is real. The prediction remains a prediction. OpenAI also says GPT-6 Astra reached its Critical cybersecurity capability threshold and needs stronger safeguards. That is serious evidence for controls and scrutiny, not proof that catastrophe is inevitable tomorrow.

Verify dramatic claims. Ask what is known, alleged, uncertain, and what incentives shape the message. Then return to work that can be bounded and measured. AI can help a small business handle missed calls, organize follow-up, map a workflow, prepare a report, route information, and connect tools. It should not receive unlimited authority because the demo looked impressive.

The conversation also tackles privacy. OpenAI says personal-workspace users can turn off Improve the model for everyone. It says Business, Enterprise, Edu, and API data are not used for training by default. Temporary Chat has separate retention rules. None of those controls is permission to submit passwords, confidential client files, medical records, legal strategy, or trade secrets without understanding the exact product and data path.

Fear holds attention. News organizations, laboratories, politicians, researchers, critics, and creators all have incentives. That does not prove deception. It tells us to inspect evidence.

Did an Anthropic researcher really quit? Yes. Jacob Coxon publicly announced his resignation and gave interviews about his concerns. His extinction forecast is an assessment, not a verified future event.
