Apex, North Carolina - Apex Weather Roller Coaster: From Severe Storms to Sunny Skies This Weekend
Apex North Carolina News and Info Daily
About
Welcome to your Apex, North Carolina community update. If you've been following the weather over the past few days, you know this region has been through quite the atmospheric roller coaster.
Just a few days ago, on Monday, March 16th, the Triangle area experienced severe thunderstorms that brought damaging winds, hail, and tornado threats to the region. According to the National Weather Service, a tornado watch was in effect for Wake County until 8 p.m. that evening. The storms packed wind gusts reaching up to 74 miles per hour, prompting Governor Josh Stein to urge residents to enable emergency alerts on their phones. The severe weather was significant enough that schools in Raleigh and Chapel Hill closed for the day, and more than 30 flights were canceled or delayed at Raleigh-Durham International Airport through American, Delta, and Southwest Airlines.
The good news is that the worst has passed. Following that cold front, temperatures dropped dramatically into the low 30s overnight, bringing much colder conditions to the area. By this week, conditions have stabilized considerably. Looking at the extended outlook, Friday, March 20th is shaping up to be mainly sunny with highs around 19 degrees Celsius and lows around 8 degrees, with only a 20 percent chance of precipitation. Saturday, March 21st will bring a mix of sun and clouds with slightly warmer temperatures reaching 22 degrees.
For those concerned about air quality and allergen levels during this transitional spring season, the recent rainfall from the severe weather system did help clear some pollen and particulates from the air, though specific pollen counts and air quality indices for today weren't available in the latest reports.
If you're looking for something fun to do this evening, the first annual Downtown Apex Shamrock Showdown is happening tonight from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m., bringing community celebration and St. Patrick's Day festivities to downtown.
