Rethinking Memory Care: What Families Should Know About Dementia Care

Answers For Elders Radio Network

About

What should quality memory care really look like—and how can families tell the difference between an impressive senior living community and an environment truly designed around the needs of people living with Alzheimer’s and other forms of dementia?

On this episode of North Star Leaders & Innovators from Answers for Elders, host and Answers for Elders founder Suzanne Newman welcomes Forrest Stepnowski, Regional Executive Director at Vineyard Park Senior Living communities, for an in-depth conversation about rethinking memory care. Forrest shares how Vineyard Park’s cottage-style model creates smaller, more home-like environments where residents can safely explore outdoor spaces, build relationships, participate in familiar activities, and maintain a greater sense of purpose, independence, and belonging.

Suzanne and Forrest explore why the physical environment matters in dementia care, including the potential for noise, crowds, confusing spaces, and overstimulation to affect someone experiencing cognitive decline. They discuss reframing behaviors as communication and even reconsidering the familiar term “wandering.” Is someone simply wandering—or are they exploring, searching for something familiar, looking for someone they love, or trying to communicate a need that caregivers haven't yet recognized?

The conversation also turns to the difficult decisions families face when choosing memory care for a parent or loved one. Suzanne and Forrest discuss what families should observe when touring a community, why beautiful chandeliers and formal dining rooms don't necessarily tell you anything about the quality of care, and why it is important to watch how caregivers interact with residents. Are residents engaged? Do they appear comfortable? Are activities meaningful? Does the environment feel like somewhere Mom or Dad could actually call home?

In the extended aftershow, Suzanne and Forrest address another major concern for families: what happens when the money runs out? They discuss long-term care costs, Medicaid, continuity of care, and the potential disruption of repeatedly moving someone with dementia from one environment to another. They also explore options for couples when one spouse develops dementia while the other remains more independent—including approaches designed to help couples stay connected while giving the caregiving spouse the support and respite they need.

For adult children caring for aging parents, spouses caring for a partner with dementia, and families beginning the search for assisted living or memory care, this episode offers a different way to think about the decision. Great dementia care isn't simply about keeping someone safe. It's about meeting people where they are, understanding what they may be communicating, preserving meaningful relationships, and helping them continue to experience purpose, dignity, connection, and as much freedom as possible throughout the aging journey.
