Is Your Home Haunted by Hidden Hazards? | The SilverHome Radio Show
Answers For Elders Radio Network
Your home may not be haunted—but what’s hiding in plain sight could affect your health, safety and ability to remain independent as you age. In this special Halloween-inspired episode of the SilverHome Radio Show, Barry Long and Tom Minty of ABLE Environments join Paul Kocharhook, President of Pathway Design + Construction, to uncover the hidden home hazards we often stop noticing: poor indoor air quality, moisture and mold, loose rugs, inadequate lighting, unsafe bathrooms, uneven floors, maintenance problems and even trouble lurking behind the walls.
The conversation begins with the air you breathe and the parts of your home you rarely see. What’s happening in the crawl space? When did you last change your furnace filter? Could moisture be accumulating behind a wall? From ventilation and chemical sensitivities to furnace maintenance and carbon monoxide concerns, the hosts explain why a healthy home is an important part of aging in place. Then they turn to fall prevention and accessibility, exploring nighttime lighting, clear pathways, grab bars, stair handrails, bathroom safety, roll-in showers and universal design solutions that can provide support without making a home feel institutional.
Finally, Barry, Tom and Paul look at the hazards homeowners can become so accustomed to that they simply stop seeing them—and the problems they may never see at all. Throw rugs, floor transitions, furniture placement, slow plumbing leaks, musty odors, pests, mold and unusual sounds can all be clues that a home deserves a closer look. The larger message is simple: a safer home begins with paying attention. By identifying small problems early and thinking proactively about how a person actually moves through and uses their home, older adults and their families can make thoughtful changes that support safety, accessibility, health and independence for years to come.
The SilverHome Radio Show is part of Answers for Elders Radio and helps older adults and their families think proactively about the choices, resources and support that can help them remain independent as they age. SilverHome airs the second week of each month on Answers for Elders Radio. Listen Saturdays at 12:00 PM on AM 1000 | 97.7 FM Northwest Newsradio.
