Don’t Be A Coward
“God did not give us a spirit of cowardice but rather a spirit of power and of love and of self-discipline.” - 2 Timothy 1:7
Fear will stop us from going where we need to go, doing what we need to do, and becoming who we were meant to be. The author of 2 Timothy, writing in the tradition of Paul, gives us three principles for defeating our cowardice.
The first principle is that we learn to walk in our power. This means taking full accountability for ourselves. We may not be responsible for our circumstances, but we are responsible for how we respond to them. We are responsible for the thoughts we entertain, the words we speak, the plans we make, the actions we take, and the company we keep.
The second principle is love. Anger, bitterness, resentment, and hate are negative tools. They can only tear down. They can never build up. We learn to love God by appreciating all the beauty and all the good around us. We learn to love ourselves by recognizing and embracing all the good that is within us. When we love ourselves, it becomes easy to love others. Love gives us the determination to do what must be done.
The third principle is self-discipline and consistency. Accountability isn’t accountability if it isn’t practiced every day. Love isn’t love if it’s only done on a part time basis. We must discipline ourselves to be consistent in our words, in our actions, in the way we treat ourselves, and in the way we treat others.
Consistently practicing personal accountability and walking in love will drive away our fears and empower us to be who we are meant to be and do what we are meant to do.
