Interview | 2026 Rebroadcast | Dick's F1 Origin Story | 194 | He Ran Out of Talent and Money at the Same Time. Thirty Years Later, He Went Back Anyway.
2 Guys, A Girl, and F1 Podcast
This is a rebroadcast from the earliest days of 2 Guys, A Girl, and F1. We've cleaned up the audio as best we could, but as independent creators, we were still learning as we went, and it shows a little. What doesn't show its age: the story itself, or the shifter kart Dick's still racing today.
Dick's Formula 1 obsession started the same way John's did: reading Rob Walker's race reports in Road & Track as a kid, with almost no way to actually watch the sport live. In this conversation, he traces the throughline from that ten-year-old self all the way to the shifter kart he races today. Along the way: the 1980 US Grand Prix at Long Beach, where he stood within ten feet of two lifelong friends and only recognized one of them; a Formula Ford career that ended when talent and money ran out simultaneously; and what actually happened decades later when he decided to go back and finish something he'd left unfinished. He also talks about why he thinks Formula One has gotten more polished and less romantic at the same time, and what's been lost along the way. Consider this the setup for a part two he's already promised.
