THE POT OF CAVIAR by ARTHUR CONAN DOYLE

In this story which Doyle also wrote as a one act play, a small military post occupied by a multinational group of civilians, nurses, and soldiers during the Boxer rebellion is threatened with being overrun by the Chinese. Certain members of the group, fearing capture, consider what they would do to avoid cruel deaths at the hands of the Chinese.
